Wenallt Flock of Pedigree Boreray Sheep

We have a small breeding flock of pedigree Boreray sheep. This very rare breed of primitive sheep orginated on the remote St Kilda archipelago off the west coast of Scotland. These are the domestic sheep that were bred by the inhabitants of the islands. They retain many of the characteristics of primitive types of sheep, and it is thought that they descended from the extinct Old Scottish Shortwool and Scottish Tanface breeds, with the influence of the Hebridean and Lewis Blackface breeds.

After the evacuation of the human population and their livestock from the islands in 1930, a remnant feral population of sheep survived on the almost inaccessible island of Boreray, and in 1971 six individuals were removed from the island for research purposes. The entire mainland UK breeding population is descended from those individuals, and the breed is classified as 'critically endangered' by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

They are a small thrifty breed; easy lambing, naturally short tailed and usually shed their fleece. They are very flighty, but full of character.

We usually have breeding stock for sale - please contact us for details.

Boreray lamb is seasonally available - the joints are small, but the meat is unique!
